The Open House movement exists to help ordinary believers rediscover the simple, relational, powerful church we see in the New Testament.

Church that gathers publicly, yes, but also house to house, where discipleship is lived, not just learned.

Acts 2:46–47 gives us the pattern:

“They met in the temple and from house to house… and the Lord added to their number daily.”

Open House brings us back to this ancient, simple rhythm that grows disciples and transforms cities one table at a time.

Meals create space for honesty, healing and belonging.

Jesus did some of His greatest ministry at tables.

We grow deeper when we talk, share, question and practise together.

You don’t need a title to open your home.

You need a heart that is open to God and open to people.

Who is it for?

The Open House is for anyone who longs for genuine community. Families, singles, people from your community, and people new to the area will all find a place. You do not need to be part of a church or have any religious background to attend.

The invitation is wide open, making space for people of all ages and stages. Whether you host or attend, the goal is simple: gather around food, conversation, and friendship in a way that is safe, natural, and welcoming.

What is an Open House?

An Open House is a gathering built around hospitality. It could be a park picnic, a street barbecue, or a meal around a dining table. The emphasis is not on programs or performance but on people. The focus is food, friendship, and faith expressed in everyday spaces.

An Open House creates opportunities to meet new people, deepen existing relationships, and experience community in a relaxed setting. It is about returning to simple practices that have always been central to the life of the church.

Where does it happen?

Open Houses happen wherever people are willing to open a space. Some hosts use their homes and invite people to sit around their table. Others choose to gather in their driveway or front yard. Many choose a local park where families can gather more freely. The flexibility of locations makes it easy for people to participate in a way that fits their lifestyle.

What matters most is not the venue but the welcome offered and the relationships built around food and shared moments.

When does it happen?

Most Open Houses are held on Friday evenings, providing a natural end to the week. The timing allows people to slow down, eat together, and connect before the weekend begins. That said, hosts can choose other times that best serve their community. Some plan a Saturday afternoon barbecue, others prefer Sunday lunch.

The idea is not about a set schedule but about creating a rhythm of hospitality. Consistency helps, but flexibility ensures gatherings are accessible for people with different routines and commitments.

How does it work?

The Open House works through everyday hospitality. A host sets a date, chooses a format, and extends an invitation to friends, neighbours, or anyone in their community. Guests arrive, share a meal, and enjoy time together. Sometimes food is provided, other times everyone brings a dish to share. Conversation flows naturally, and some hosts may include prayer or a short reflection.

The simplicity makes it reproducible, so new hosts can easily step up and start their own Open House, multiplying the impact.

What about children?

Children are an important part of Open House gatherings. These events are intentionally child-friendly, welcoming kids of all ages. In parks, children have space to play while adults connect. In homes or streets, simple activities or shared meals keep kids included. Parents do not need to worry about formality or keeping children quiet; the gatherings are relaxed and flexible. In fact, kids often help break down barriers, making everyone feel at ease. Their presence reminds us that community is intergenerational and life-giving.

Do I need to bring food?

That depends on the host. Some Open Houses are bring-and-share, where everyone contributes a plate or dish. Others are fully provided by the host, who prepares a simple meal for guests. The focus is not on the food itself but on the community built around the table. Bringing food is a wonderful way to contribute, but guests are always welcome even if they cannot bring anything. The Open House is about generosity and inclusion, so no one is excluded if they come empty-handed.

Is it safe?

Yes. Safety is a priority for every Open House. Gatherings are designed to be simple, open, and respectful. Hosts follow basic guidelines such as being alcohol-free, ensuring children are cared for, and choosing venues that are accessible. Each host receives a short kit that includes safety notes, child-safe practices, and tips for hospitality. These safeguards help make Open Houses secure and welcoming for all. The aim is that every person feels comfortable, respected, and cared for while sharing in food and conversation.
